Responsible Business Programme
Ufadhili Trust

Ufadhili Trust is an independent, non-profit, support organization founded in 2001 under the Public Trusts Act (Laws of Kenya). Ufadhili exists primarily to promote social responsibility in East Africa. It carries out its mandate through four core programmes; Corporate Social Responsibility, Community Resource Mobilisation encompassing philanthropy and volunteerism, NGO excellence and the Citizens Assembly Initiative.

Brief- Ufadhili’s Responsible Business Programme
Ufadhili’s goal in working with business in East Africa is to inspire and encourage business to increase the quality and extent of its contribution to social and economic development, by making CSR an essential part of business excellence. Over the last six years, Ufadhili has worked to achieve this through;

I.  Advocacy & Awareness Creation
Ufadhili works to provide consistent and appropriate information intended to give CSR a fixed identity and dispel current misconceptions that limit business involvement and contribution to the sustainability agenda. To this end, Ufadhili is heavily involved in raising awareness around CSR and related themes. The aim is to provide information on the importance and benefits of companies embracing CSR especially in relation to the fight against poverty.

II. Research
Over the years, Ufadhili has worked to strengthen the knowledge base around CSR issues in East Africa by conducting and disseminating studies to key stakeholders on issues affecting business. Currently, there is limited information on CSR in the region. Ufadhili uses research as an advocacy tool to rally business to respond to responsibility issues within their sphere of influence as well as to influence government to create an enabling environment for businesses.

III.  Benchmarking
Ufadhili has been involved in the development of CSR standards for companies in East Africa. This is with the aim of assisting companies to aspire to excellence in their business practices. In addition, as a way to encourage companies to maintain these standards, Ufadhili has been keen on profiling and celebrating these businesses through various award schemes tailored for the private sector.

IV.  Training and Development
Over the years, Ufadhili has been actively involved in providing focused and needs based training programs for CSR practitioners as a way to build their skills and expertise in delivering high impact CSR programmes within business. Ufadhili works to provide consistent and necessary information to business leaders as a means of influencing management decision-making so that it is more sensitive to responsibility issues within business.

V.  Support to individual businesses
Ufadhili recognizes that from time to time companies need individual and specialized support in mainstreaming CSR in the business process. Ufadhili has supported such companies in areas especially around policy & programme development.
