National Business Initiative (NBI)

Introduction to the Partner

The National Business Initiative (NBI) is a South African not for profit development organisation, established in March 1995. The NBI membership comprises of a voluntary group of leading South African and multinational companies working together towards sustainable growth and development in South Africa. Through the collective power of its member companies, the NBI is shaping a sustainable future through responsible business leadership and action.

As South Africa’s preeminent voluntary collective movement, the NBI has been acknowledged by government and other stakeholders as a credible partner. Through this impactful collaboration, business is seriously and substantively engaging on socio-economic and environmental issues. At the same time, business and international partners such as the World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD) of which the NBI is the regional partner, and the United Nations Global Compact (UNGC), of which the NBI is the focal point in South Africa, have recognised the NBI’s ability to inspire and mobilise business for collective and voluntary action towards progressive business leadership and action.
