CSR Centre Bangladesh, as the Focal Point of the United Nations Global Compact in Bangladesh, participated at the “UNGC Conference-Making Global Goals Local Business India” and “XV Annual Local Network Forum” in India to explore how Local Networks can play a leading role in facilitating private sector engagement on the SDGs. Over 300 local and global leaders attended the Conference. The CSR Centre team gave critical insight on how responsible business action on the SDGs can drive breakthrough solutions and new market opportunities.

In partnership with the Danish Fashion Institute, Danish Chamber of Commerce, and the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) the CSR Centre is implementing a project entitled “Step up-Responsible Production as a Business Driver” to incorporate CSR into the RMG Sector of Bangladesh through Capacity Building Initiatives.

Under this project, CSR Centre conducted the CSR baseline studies, prepared CSR training modules and delivering training. For this project, CSR Centre will prepare the CSR action plans focusing on UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights covering all four areas of UN Global Compact (UNGC) and link with business case studies. This project will help the participating factories to be capable of making their own CSR risk assessments, action plans for prevention and mitigation, and establish a management system and CSR communication to customers and other stakeholders by the end of the project.

The Capacity Building Unit at the CSR Centre conducted “Introducing CSR & BSCI Standards” Workshop in Myanmar 2017 to Myanmar Garments Manufacturing Association (MGMA) member companies at UMFCCI, MGMA, Yangon and Myanmar. These included participants from SME enterprises, Factory owners, Managers, Middle Management, Supervisors and Production Managers.

The objective of the Workshop was to increase awareness amongst locally owned garment companies in regards to CSR, adapting social compliance in the garment production and value chains as well as to give an extensive overview to internationally recognised CSR standards, initiatives and certification processes.

Under the project KiK Suppliers Social Improvement Programme Implementation, the CSR Centre team visited over 30 factories in different region of Pakistan and Bangladesh. Through this project CSR Centre Bangladesh supports the factories to improve their social and environmental performance through CSR interventions and help them to increase their business competitiveness.

To facilitate the development of Bangladesh’s textile and garments sector, CSR Centre came in partnership with CSI Ltd, to develop training materials in form of handbooks for the workers, supervisors and managers on “Factory Guidebook for Effective Worker-Manager Communication” and “Directory for RMG Workers-Sector Specific Social Service in Dhaka”. The handbook on “Factory Guidebook for Effective Worker-Manager Communication” will serve as basic guideline for managers and workers on how to engage in effective dialogue to implement improvement projects, solve conflict and improve working condition as well as productivity. The second Guidebook on “Directory for RMG Workers-Sector Specific Social Service in Dhaka” aims to assimilate information gathered from secondary sources in Bangladesh into a single directory on some priority issues like health & medical services, child care, legal advice, financial skills, vocational skills and other livelihood option.

The CSR Center has been nominated and selected for the Best CSR Practices for Community Development Award 2017 by The South Asian Business Excellence Awards. The South Asian Business Excellence Awards is the most prestigious honor in South Asian region to celebrate leaders around the region working to strengthen and increase economic opportunity.
