Widely available to us, and free, why aren’t we all asking for tap water? The scheme Give Me Tap is encouraging us to do just that.
Start asking for tap water
Bottled water is an incredibly expensive commodity, and the simple fact is that we cannot carry on with plastic water bottle culture as it is having a huge impact on the environment. Did you know that 2.5% of oil consumption goes to making bottled water? And that bottled water is sometimes more expensive than petrol? The situation is dramatic, but the step we can take to change it is simple. We need to ask for tap water.
Carry a water bottle wherever you go!
Give Me Tap is a scheme with a mission to encourage us to carry a handy bottle around with us which we can take into any of the venues signed up the ‘provider’ network and ask for free refills. By doing so, we save money, reduce waste and promote water access for all. The bottle itself is reusable and safe, made from durable stainless steel, and 70% of the profits from bottle sales go to independent water projects in Africa.
Give MeTap is a very fresh campaign full of youthful energy and hope. It was started, and is run, by current or recent students, and other students are invited to bring the movement to their campus. They’ve just launched an iPhone App which helps you find your nearest tap water provider when you’re out and about – which is exactly when many of us get stuck and end up spending money on bottled water.
