Posted: Monday 6 June 16, 12.34pm GMT

The 8th annual 'Our Belgrade' volunteering event was held on 14th May at Belgrade, Serbia. The initiative is run by Smart Kolektiv and the Responsible Business Forum Serbia. Since it was first launched more than 30 companies have participated, having in total 2,700 employee volunteers and 9,000 beneficiaries.

The 8th annual Our Belgrade volunteering event was held on 14th May. The Ambassador of the United States of America, Kyle Scott, and the Head of the European Union Delegation to Serbia, Michael Davenport, were among the many volunteers who refurbished schoolyards, participated in inclusive workshops with children with disabilities and the elderly and prepared meals for socially vulnerable fellow citizens at more than ten locations throughout Belgrade.

Our Belgrade gathered more than 200 volunteers from companies, such as Banca Intesa, Coca-Cola Hellenic, Delta Holding, Erste Bank Serbia, Eurobank Serbia, Mercator-S, Meris, Societe Generale Serbia, UniCredit Bank Serbia, Vojvodjanska Bank and Vip mobile, as well as representatives of the international community, to promote community engagement, giving and corporate volunteerism.

“This is an excellent opportunity to come to help and give something to society. We in America say that the most important thing is not what you get in life, but what you give. This is one of the opportunities for us to help those who may not be as fortunate as we are,” said Ambassador Kyle Scott. Other volunteers from the U.S. Embassy included the Deputy Chief of Mission, Gordon Duguid and the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) Mission Director, Azza El-Abd. They joined over 50 volunteers who helped renovate the basketball court and garden at the Radivoje Popović Elementary School in Zemun.

The Head of the EU Delegation to Serbia, Michael Davenport, as well as other members of the Delegation and their families, volunteered at the “Evo Ruka” association for children with disabilities and their families. Davenport, who volunteered at the past five Our Belgrade events said, “It is very important that both foreign and local companies support such campaigns. Companies no matter their size, should be aware of the role they play in their communities.”

In the past eight years, more than 30 companies have participated in Our Belgrade and more than 2,700 employees have engaged in giving back and contributing to the improvement of the quality of life of more than 9,000 adults and children. Our Belgrade is organised by Smart Kolektiv and the Responsible Business Forum Serbia, with support from the USAID. Our Belgrade is a part of a wider initiative UK Business in the Community’s Give & Gain Day.
