ENGAGE Key Cities launches in Beijing

Posted: Friday 29 October 10, 1.48pm GMT

The ENGAGE Key Cities project in Beijing, China held its first successful meeting on 19th October 2010.

More than 25 representatives from business including Allen & Overy, Aviva, BAT, Citi, Freshfields and TCS and many Chinese companies such as Baidu and Huayuan Property attended the inaugural meeting organised by CSR360 GPN partner Fuping Development Institute.

Fuping identified Migrant Children as the Key local social issue that they and the participating companies could address. As a consequence of mass rural to urban migration, Beijing alone has 400,000 migrant children living in the city. There are currently around 450 schools for migrant children of which many are not registered.

At the meeting, delegates heard from Journalist and PHD research fellow, Yukuan Guo who has campaigned on the issue of migrant children for some time. Teachers from the migrant schools spoke to the delegates about their experience of teaching in the schools and reiterated as to why they think it is such a brilliant issue for the companies to support and make a difference to.

The project will support 3 special migrant schools in Beijing with volunteers acting like mentors and carrying out a number of activities such as taking the children to museums and interesting places in and around Beijing that they would not normally have access to. The aim is to broaden the children’s experience and encourage them to gain as good an education as possible in order to make their lives as prosperous as possible.

Companies are now at the stage of confirming their commitments with volunteering activities likely to begin in late November.
