In Valencia partners Fundar have launched a football league in prisons among inmates and volunteers from different companies which was played for the first time this year. A large numbers of volunteers and interns have participated, enhancing models of healthy leisure and rehabilitation for the inmates.
Bancaja, with three teams, SPB with two and Barclays and BBVA with one each are the four companies who embarked on this new project, aimed at promoting sporting activities among the prison population of Valencia through corporate volunteering.
Matches were played on Friday afternoon and Saturday morning, and lasted for 10 weeks, in which 40 matches were played.
There were ten teams formed from 100 inmates at Valencia’s Prision Facility and seven composed of 66 volunteers from four companies, with inmates also taking part as referees. The prison facility in Valencia is Spain’s largest and one of the largest in Europe.
After the comnclusion of the league, mixed teams of inmates and volunteers also played each other, demonstrating the power of integration through sport.
