Diversity Charter in Poland

Posted: Tuesday 21 February 12, 10.25am GMT

On February 14th 2012 at the Chancellery of the Polish Prime Minister 14 companies have signed the Polish version of the Diversity Charter.

The Diversity Charter is a written obligation signed by a company which declares to introduce the prohibition on discrimination in the workplace and decides to undertake measures to create and promote diversity. This way, the Polish Diversity Charter, along with the charters launched in France, Spain, Italy, Austria, Germany, Sweden and Belgium as well as the charters prepared by Luxembourg, UK, Ireland, Denmark, Netherlands, Bulgaria, Romania, Finland, Norway and Greece, joins the platform promoting good practices as regards equal treatment. The project of the Polish Diversity Charter is part of the EU-level Exchange Platform funded by the European Commission Directorate-General for Justice.

Works on the polish Diversity Charter were started in 2011 by the Responsible Business Forum. “Following other European countries, we have decided, together with the partner companies, to create such a document in Poland. Apart from the business sector, non-governmental organizations and public institutions have taken part in the works and consultations on the Charter. Special input was delivered by the Office of the Government Plenipotentiary for Equal Treatment. Signing that declaration, which was created by dialogue and agreement, is an expression of the organization’s will to implement politics of equal treatment and diversity management”, says Mirella Panek-Owsiańska, President of the Responsible Business Forum.

Diversity Charter is under honorary auspices of Office of the Government Plenipotentiary for Equal Treatment and Office of the Polish Human Rights Defender.

Diversity Charter in Poland was signed by the Presidents and Board Members of the companies – initiatiors of the Diversity Charter in Poland: Aviva, British American Tobacco Polska, Danone, Deloitte Polska, Grupa Orbis, Grupa TP, Grupa Żywiec, Kompania Piwowarska, L’Oreal Polska, Nutricia, Provident Polska S.A., PwC, Totalizator Sportowy sp. z o.o. and Unilever. Together, these enterprises employ almost 50 thousand people.

Diversity Charter in Poland exceeds regulations of the Labour Code, and apart from introducing diversity management in companies, it also mentions appointing a person or a team coordinating such actions in the organization, implementing periodic anti-discrimination education for all employees and reporting on the undertaken activities and their results.
