Austrian CSR-Day 2014: Effective business solutions for a sustainable future

Posted: Friday 14 November 14, 3.18pm GMT

More than 300 participants attended the 9th Austrian CSR-Day on 30th September 2014 at the Viennese University of Economics and Business. The conference, organized by respACT, the Austrian Business Council for Sustainable Development, focused on effective corporate measures meeting the environmental and social challenges of the upcoming years.

Ursula Simacek, respACT president & CEO of SIMACEK Facility Management Group GmbH, concludes: “A substantial innovation potential is being released by integrating corporate responsibility towards the environment and society, particularly if targeting positive and negative impact. CSR results in process optimisation, improved stakeholder relations and the development of new products and services. With the support from the government and civil society economy is able to contribute to Sustainable Development”.

From vision to action

The Viennese conference used the World Business Council for Sustainable Development’s (WBCSD’s) report “Vision 2050” and its “Action 2020” as the basis for all discussions. Peter Bakker, president of the WBCSD, explained: “The World Business Council for Sustainable Development’s (WBCSD) Action2020 is a science-based platform for business action. Taking the best scientific evidence, it identifies the key priority areas in which business can and must have a significant impact over the next few years. These range from Climate Change, to Ecosystems & Land Use, to Skills & Employment and a quantifiable ‘Societal Must-Have’ has been set for each priority area.

Action2020 is the platform for business to develop solutions that are impactful, scalable, and measurable, addressing the most important environmental and social challenges. Together with our work on Redefining Value, we are significantly improving the business case for sustainability, ensuring that more sustainable companies are both recognised and rewarded”.

The 9th Austrian CSR-Day was supported by the Federal Ministry of Science, Research and Economy, Vienna University of Economics and Business, Bundesimmobiliengesellschaft mbH (federal real-estate company), voestalpine AG, Mondi AG, REWE International AG and OMV Aktiengesellschaft (OMV Austria).
