Active Citizen Network, Italy organises series of European events on Patient Care

Posted: Friday 7 July 17, 11.04am GMT

During the months of May and June Active Citizen Network (ACN) has participated in various events regarding Patient Care around Europe.

For celebrating the 11th European Patients’ Rights Day on 10 May 2017 in Brussels, ACN held a multi-stakeholder conference: “European & National Medicines Regulatory Systems: challenges for an equitable, timely and suitable access to innovation”.

The aim of the convention was to discuss, inform and suggest new approaches to the existing European and national medicines regulatory systems, for better management of access to innovation. Indeed, the access to innovative therapies strongly contributes to define the quality of life of patients and the quality of healthcare services provided, respecting the fundamental values recognised by the European Charter of Patients’ Rights. The event was an occasion to inform, discuss and take commitments to improve the respect of patients’ rights and their involvement in the policy-making and regulatory processes at national and European level.

This is not all ACN has been doing during the last months, ACN has launched the project ”EU Civic Prize on Chronic Pain – Collecting good practices”. The aim is to give evidence of existing good practices in European countries in terms of struggle against pain. During the 8-9 June 2017 they celebrated the first “EU Civic Prize on Chronic Pain”. The Award Ceremony was celebrated during the SIP – Societal Impact of Pain Symposium 2017 in Malta, during the Maltese Presidency of European Union at the presence of the President of Malta H.E. Marie-Luise Coleiro Preca.

On 20 June, Active Citizenship Network participated in the international conference “On patients’ rights in Europe and Cyprus”. It was also the final event of the project “Patients’ Voice”, implemented by the Universal Patient Rights Association (UPRA), with the aim to promote and advocate for patients’ rights in Northern Cyprus. This project started in March 2016 in partnership with Active Citizenship Network.

For ending the month of June, in partnership with SIAR, the Italian Society for Regulatory Activities, ACN has organised the European conference “How to ensure treatments and the respect of patients’ time across Europe’ Focus on timely access to innovative medicines after the European Commission approval”, which intends to be a first follow-up step of the last European Patients’ Rights Day. It was held in Brussels on June 28th at the European Parliament, hosted by the MEPs Interest Group “European Patients’ rights & cross-border healthcare”.

The meeting served as a mean to stimulate, through a high-level debate, the European issue on access to medicines and sustainability of healthcare systems, promoting a reflection on all possible options to ensure a more rapid real access to innovative medicines and strengthening the specific knowledge on the topic within patient organizations, for a more effective advocacy towards national Regulators and Ministries of health.
