Background

Companies in Hong Kong are showing a growing interest in employing people disabled talent. However, many are held back in their efforts by a general lack of confidence in how to go about it. Offering internship programmes to students with disabilities can be a good way to start. This ½ day event is designed to encourage more companies to offer internship programmes to students with disabilities. Disability experts, companies and disabled individuals themselves will share expertise and exchange views on what successful programmes look like.

Objectives

  • To raise awareness of the role that companies can play in increasing the employability of students with disabilities in Hong Kong.
  • To increase the disability confidence of employers and encourage more companies to offer internship programmes to students with disabilities in Hong Kong.
  • To share and build expertise on what successful internship programmes for students with disabilities look like – engaging key stakeholders in the discussion.

Who Should Attend

The facilitated dialogue is open to representatives of both the corporate sector and individuals affected by disabilities. Specifically:

Employers

Senior representatives from both the private and public sector who are responsible for ensuring that they have access to the best talent and are creating workplace environments that enable all to contribute to their full potential.

Students/Professionals with Disabilities

A range of individuals who have direct experience of what it means to have a disability in the context of the workplace, especially students either looking for internship, or individuals who has already gone through an internship programme.

Universities

Representatives from universities who are responsible for providing support on career transition or equal opportunities for students with disabilities

9:10 – Introduction by Community Business

9:20 – Challenges Facing Students with Disabilities in Hong Kong and the Role of the Corporate Sector
Civic Exchange will share findings from its recent research: How Hong Kong’s Universities recruit, admit and support students with disabilities, highlighting the call to action for companies.

9:45 – Identifying Talent – Forging Links with Universities
A representative from Hong Kong University will share thoughts on how the corporate sector can work more closely with universities to identify and support disabled talent.

10:00 – Internship Programmes for Students with Disabilities – Experiences from Elsewhere
International disability experts will share their experience of running successful internship programmes and provide advice for companies looking to do the same in Asia.

10:45 – Refreshment Break

11:00 – Experiences in Hong Kong – Corporate and Individual Perspectives
A sharing of case studies of specific internship programmes companies have run for students with disabilities – with views from the both the corporate and individual perspective.
